Sun To Introduce Galaxy Servers

Today, Sun Microsystems is expected to introduce its new line of 64-bit network servers, which are code-named Galaxy, and use dual-core Opteron processors from AMD.
Sun is counting on this new line of servers to solidify its place in the market, a market that Sun vice president of global information systems strategy, Larry Singer estimates is worth about $17.5 billion.
"We're entering a new marketplace and will grow very fast," said Singer. "We will be the lead player."
The servers to be unveiled include the Sun Fire X2100, X4100, and X4200. They are partly an effort to take business away from HP and Dell in the financial industry according to China Martens of IDG News Service who reports:
The Sun Fire X2100 is priced starting from $745 and is based around one Opteron Model 146 processor and comes with Sun's Solaris 10 operating system and 512MB of memory. Entry-level versions of the 1U Sun Fire X4100 and 2U Sun Fire X4200 come with one Opteron Model 248 processor, a service processor, a power supply unit, Solaris 10 and 1GB of memory, according to Sun. The 1U Sun Fire X4100 is priced at $2195 and the 2U Sun Fire X4200, at $2595. U is the standard unit for measuring the space between shelves on a server rack, where 1U equals 1.75 inches.
Sun Microsystems stock has increased nearly 10% since the beginning of the month partly due to the upcoming launch of these servers. Shares closed at $4 on Friday.
